Déjà vu [dey-zhah voo, vyoo] The illusion of having previously experienced something actually being encountered for the first time.
Luck [luhk] The force that seems to operate for good or ill in a person’s life, as in shaping circumstances, events, or opportunities.
It’s been a crazy month since our train trip. The week after returning, the paperwork was signed and our house was sold; we were in effect without a permanent place to live. What we had was a plan…and an AirBnB for forty-five days. A charming, turn of the 1900’s craftsman house beautifully decorated with wood moldings, doors and floors in the traditional craftsman style. Unfortunately, as this was to be a layover station and not a weekend stay, we brought a lot of boxes and bins with us so this lovely little place is a bit over filled with stuff.
The plan you ask? Or not, doesn’t matter as I’m going to share it with you anyway, was one we have been working toward for a long time. Buy an RV and travel. At any other time this would probably be a good plan. Aside from local places, there are several large dealerships in Texas we wanted to check out (and visit our son and daughter-in-law while we were there) to find the perfect RV. I’m sure you know what happened to that idea. Quarantine, lock down, shelter in place.
So there we were. Our home was sold and in 45 days if we didn’t have an RV we were either going to have to continue paying a substantial amount in rent to stay in our quaint little craftsman or move in with one of the kids. Why not just rent an apartment you may be pondering. Aside from our not having much in the way of furniture anymore we also have three cats and there are not many places nearby that will accept that many. We lucked out with the place we had. Three cats? Really? How are they adapting to the move you may or may not be wondering. Surprisingly well would be my response. They’ve gone from being indoor / outdoor cats to strictly indoors in a much smaller space with minimum fuss.
So there we were. The restrictions in Utah were just starting to hit but we were still able to spend our first Saturday checking out a few different places with RV Dave had an interest in. Fortune favored us again that day as we found the perfect new home at the price we wanted. By Tuesday evening it was sitting in front of our temporary cottage. Now, the RV is in good condition and while the interior was fine the way it was, we both wanted to personalize it, make it more our own style so to speak. Something we had planned to do with our previous home for the many years we lived there but only accomplished when we knew it was time to sell. This time around we are doing it first with as much of the painting as possible happening now because I do not want to try and paint the place while living in it with three cats. That would be madness. Besides, this whole quarantine issue seems like a excellent time to be reclusive and exclusively spend our free time working on our home…again…deja vu.

The Desert Pub

The color scheme
Now, I don’t know about you, but I like to name the places I live. It just amuses me. With its light brown color scheme I chose to christen our new place The Desert Pub which will of course be shortened to The Pub. “Time to go to the pub” will be said when we head home from anywhere. “Did you want to meet us at the pub?” will be asked of friends. It’s going to be so much fun.
The Pub will eventually have a steampunk explorer style which is going…okay. There are things about RVs that are quite different from a standard house so finding items as simple as light fixtures and switches are more challenging than I feel it should be. I admit though, we have made a couple of quick trips to Home Depot for supplies (because they do not deliver paint or wood) but we are keeping those, along with all other outings, to as minimal as possible. Amazon has been a lifesaver and I always love Etsy.
Between the pandemic and the new round of home improvements be prepared for project posts. Hopefully you will enjoy those! If anyone knows of places to buy steampunk light fixtures, please let me know!
